Mid April sees the opening at the Narberth Gallery of a photography exhibition featuring the work of five local photographers - Gary Llewellyn, Mark Jowitt, Adrian Hawke, Jude Howells and Dez Leeke and their personal lens-eye views of the land and seascapes of Pembrokeshire –sunsets, sunrises, rocks and rivers.
Pembrokeshire born Gary Llewellyn said “I often harness the last glimmers of twilight within extremely long shutter exposures and am frequently found at dawn or dusk at remote and inaccessible rocky foreshores or outcrops, perched precariously in the search for perfect light and composition. I try to break the traditional rules of photography and shatter many preconceived ideas surrounding the artistic merit of the medium.”
Since Mark Jowitt moved to Pembrokeshire he’s been exploring the county capturing the natural stone in the landscape. “The theme I’m exploring is how man and animals continue to use the stone for many different purposes. This is my first use of digital photography, but I don’t tamper with the images in any way. What you see is what I shot” Mark said.
Adrian Hawke’s work has grown out of nearly 20 years’ experience and he commented “I aim to create images which stir emotions and memories and encapsulate mood and feeling, but the most important thing for me is timing; timing of light, seasons, weather and tide”.
Gallery owner and artist Dez Leeke said “I was in the darkroom with my Dad ever since I can remember. My camera is my constant companion and I use it much less now for images for my artwork and more of a relaxation on my days off in the beautiful Pembrokeshire countryside.“
Jude Howells’ balance and softness in her work is almost painterly and prefers to let her images do the talking.
The photography exhibition runs from 18 April – 17 May
Gallery open Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 5pm.
